New ranking of top e-commerce sites in Russia published by Data Insight
Russian Search Marketing previously referred to Data Insight’s yearly rating for e-commerce stores (see our coverage of the 2017 results here, information on 2016 results and rating methodology here, as well additional information on e-commerce sites in 2015 and selection criteria here). This year, in addition to publishing the latest ranking of the top 100 e-commerce stores, Data Insight also held an online Top 100 Party to celebrate the achievements of various online stores.
In this post, read about the top 10 Russian e-commerce sites, market breakthroughs, and high-potential online stores receiving Top 100 Party Online Awards.
Top 10 e-commerce stores in Russia: 2018 and 2019
Compared to 2018 (you can see the full list of top 100 e-commerce stores in Russia in 2018 here), the list of top 10 e-commerce sites in Russia has not changed a lot (full data available here). However, the growth rate and the average order values are quite disparate, even for stores in same market segments.
In 2019, only online sales from Russian companies to Russian consumers were taken into account, which has affected, for example, the results for the Top 10 newcomer, aliexpress.ru.
In November 2019, the number of unique visitors on AliExpress in Russia was 24.9 million people, 30% higher than during the same time period in 2018 (according to this rbc.ru article). According to this TASS post, the number of Russian sellers on the AliExpress platform grew almost 100-fold.
“Best of” e-commerce sites awards and categories for 2019
Successes of several e-commerce stores were recognized during the Top 100 Party online award event. Here are some of the most successful e-commerce companies on the Russian market.
Brand development award for the highest direct traffic growth rate
Although Goods.ru, an online marketplace, did not make it to the top 10, the results are quite impressive: its online sales grew by 271%, and the number of orders made in 2019 increased by 272%. Yet this did not result in a decrease in the average order value, which stayed at the same level of 4,090 rubles.
Interestingly, in terms of average order value, Miuz.ru, a jewelry online store, saw the highest growth.
Sales growth for direct sales and marketplaces
The Data Insight awards also celebrated online stores with various growth models for the best sales results in 2019.
Top 100 breakthroughs in 2019
Data Insight recognizes the following online stores for their successes in 2019:
- Perekrestok.ru as the breakthrough of the year. In 2018 this online FMCG store was not in the top 100, but in 2019 it shot up to 41st place in the ranking
- Beru.ru for the highest growth rate among the online stores that made it into the top 100 in 2018: this marketplace is in 12th place in the 2019 rankings with 691% growth in sales volume and 806% growth in the number of orders in 2019. At the same time, the average order value went down by 13%. Interestingly, most e-commerce stores in this category did not see a decrease in average order value, with the exception of ozon.ru (-7%).
- Apteka.ru for higher growth rates in 2019 than in 2018: in 2018, sales grew by 58%, and in 2019, apteka.ru shot from 13th place to 8th place in the ranking thanks to a 171% increase in sales.
- Sbermarket.ru was recognized as one of the e-commerce stores with the highest potential among online stores that didn’t make it into the top 100 in 2018.
