Yandex.Eats data for July-September 2020 shows regional differences in takeout dishes preferences in Russia

Yandex.Eats works with 29,000 restaurants in 130 Russian towns and cities. The Yandex research team sifted through its order data to find out which types of takeout dishes Russians across the country love to order for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

Top 10 takeout dishes across Russia

Fast-food meals are firmly in the lead across Russia, followed by predominately international hits, from pizza to fries.

Here’s the breakdown of Russians’ top 10 takeout food categories:

  3. Soups:

  4. Chicken dishes:
    1. Nuggets
    2. Chicken wings
    3. Chicken fingers
  5. Salads:
    1. Caesar salad
    2. Olivier salad
    3. Greek salad
  6. Desserts:
    1. Ice cream
    2. Croissants
    3. Cheesecake
  7. Flatbread wraps

Takeout regional differences: what Russians love to order in different cities

The Yandex research team identified some regional favorites, with Russian, Asian, and even Mongolian and Buryat cuisines getting to be in the spotlight across the country.

Russian dishes that are popular in different cities across Russia:

  • Chicken Kiev in Rostov-on-Don
  • Bliny in Ryazan and Volgograd
  • Syrniki in Sochi

Asian cuisine dishes:

  • Spring rolls in Moscow, Kazan, Nizhniy Novgorod
  • Stir-fried noodles in Krasnoyarsk
  • Sushi in Khabarovsk and Vladivostok

Some Italian dishes are more popular than burgers in some Russian cities:

  • lasagna is well-loved in Saint Petersburg
  • pasta dishes are preferred by Yekaterinburg residents

At the same time, Caucasian cuisine, although not represented in the top 10 takeout dishes, is popular in several cities across Russia:

Mongolian and Buryat cuisines, represented by manti and buuz dumplings, are popular in Tomsk, Irkutsk, Tomsk, and Barnaul.

Takeout dishes in Russia: food orders by time of day

The most popular morning orders, defined as orders made between 6 am and noon, are for the following:

  • porridge (with oatmeal being the most popular type of porridge)
  • omelets and fried eggs
  • syrniki

Afternoon orders – from noon to 6 pm – are for more substantial dishes:

Finally, from 6 pm to midnight orders for fried shrimp, cheese sticks, and khinkali are the top three takeout orders.

Interestingly, dark kitchen trends in 2020 are not aligned with the top takeout dishes by cuisine. As Data Insight research shows, the majority of restaurants with dark kitchens offering delivery are Japanese, followed by Chinese and Italian. Read more about dark kitchens in Russia in this post.
